A Lean Alternative to Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) for Enterprise Strategy Execution
Enterprises typically pursue SPM to solve two problems: (1) trace strategy to projects and budgets, and (2) get operational KPIs linked to resources and capacity. SPM vendors promise to own both. That promise is attractive but entails three predictable trade-offs: lengthy implementation, high dependence on consultancy, and duplicated data and dashboards across ERP, SPM, and BI tools.
An alternative architecture can achieve the same outcomes with far less complexity:
- Keep the existing ERP as the system of record. Financials, resource allocations, capacity, and transactional KPIs remain in ERP (SAP, Dynamics, Oracle). These systems contain trusted, auditable data and should not be re-entered or duplicated.
- Use a strategy execution focused tool such as Amplon. The X-matrix and catchball mechanics provide disciplined strategic deployment and governance. Alternatively, implement a simple OKR-oriented model (objectives → initiatives → KPIs). In both governance models, Amplon links strategic objectives to initiatives, measures progress, and supports corrective actions.
- Report the truth in the existing BI. A BI tool (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) aggregates ERP operations and Amplon’s strategic metadata. Executives get a single dashboard of truth for reporting and decision making.
SPM alternative in the short term
When your ERP workflows are fragmented and you need advanced functions like detailed capacity modelling or complex portfolio optimization across thousands of projects. In that case, a full SPM can serve as a patchwork solution until core ERP processes are modernized.
Practical implementation checklist (minimal viable integration effort):
- Define the small set of KPIs that matter to each objective.
- Create stable ERP views (or OData endpoints) for those KPIs.
- Amplon ingest these feeds via scheduled pulls or OData endpoints.
- BI dashboards combine ERP measures with Amplon’s KPI state trackers which are extracted from OData interface.
- Run a short pilot with one business unit (BU), measure time saved in reporting and number of overdue interlocks corrected.
- Roll out to multiple BU
Tools like Amplon create a lightweight strategic layer that links objectives, KPIs, and initiatives, without adding reporting burden or duplicating existing ERP and BI work. With this lean configuration, organizations get the same strategy-execution visibility that heavy SPM suites promise, but at a fraction of the cost and effort.
If your organization wants to test this pattern, a low-risk pilot: Proof of Value (PoV) deployment typically demonstrates value quickly and without major systems change.

We’ve been using the Amplon X-matrix tool for our 500-person organization over the past two years. It has significantly enhanced clarity. Now, we have an easily accessible clear view for everyone of our long-term goals, annual objectives, and development topics both at the organizational level and within each activity.
Moreover, the Amplon team’s responsiveness and support have been outstanding. Overall, Amplon X-matrix has been an invaluable asset for our organization.
